Have you ever wondered why Carole & Tuesday gained a number of fans? It’s an anime that looks plain and dry at first glance, but in reality, it’s one of the most successful titles I’ve started in the Spring 2019 lineup. It’s a music anime, and it has a lot more to offer behind its beautiful melodies.

Carole & Tuesday is a story of two young girls who encounter each other in the most unexpected circumstance. Tuesday Simmons has a big passion for music who runs away from home carrying her Gibson acoustic guitar to pursue her dream to become a great musician. She crosses the path of Carole, another aspiring musician, who loves to play the piano. As these two yougsters become closer sharing the same passion, they decide to team up as a singer-songwriter duo under the name Carole & Tuesday.

The story is very inspiring.

Carole & Tuesday has a very strong potential as a music anime, and I didn’t expect I would love its wholesome story a lot more than any big hit titles of the season. I love music, so I had a big expectation how the anime greatly offers a beautiful rhythm to its audience. As I was watching its first episode, I was incredibly surprised that it wasn’t an ordinary music oriented show. It introduces a strong female lead, Tuesday, who shares the same challenges with people who struggle with life choices. Then there’s Carole, a part timer, who doesn’t know what lies ahead of her because she has always felt something is missing. Despite their hardship, they are still persistent to pursue their common goals while learning a lot from their experiences. The story has a deep emotional core brought by the pain and sufferings of these young individuals, and it’s very inspiring how they show determination in the middle of difficult situations. Though the story is set in a fictional world, their journey is very realistic and relatable in many ways as it shows how passion drives people to be true to themselves. Their persistence to reach their musical dream is contagiously amazing and gives a lot of positive vibes. Their own stories and their great talents could easily reach my soul.

The animation is outstanding.

It’s no doubt that Bones studio has done another spectacular job of creating a beautiful piece of work that will surely stun the audience. I didn’t whine any single bits of it because everything is smoothly crafted from the character designs to the way they perform on stage. It’s like watching an actual performance that’s very bright and lively. Everything is made visually pleasing for the audience, and I couldn’t have asked any better work. Also, the director of the series is Shinichiro Watanabe who is best known for directing the massively popular anime Cowboy Bepop, so it’s no question why Carole & Tuesday has gained tremendous attention as it is a masterpiece by a legendary director.

It has incredible theme songs.

One of the most remarkable elements of the series is, of course, the music. The singing voices of the main characters aren’t the actual voice actresses. Singers Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann play the singing voices of Carole and Tuesday respectively. They’re both stunning in their performance, and their songs surprisingly have English lyrics. Recently, I’ve started to become a big fan of Carole and Tuesday themselves to the point I followed their viral Instagram account (like they exist in the real world) because I knew they deserve a big attention from both anime and music lovers. Listening to their songs in the anime feels so refreshing. I could even visualize myself having a good time lying in a hammock in one lazy afternoon while listening to their sweet melodies. I like the lyrics of their songs which are expressively rendered and very meaningful. They performed the opening theme “Kiss Me” and the ending theme “Hold Me Now”, and I can’t simply skip any part of them.

Also, aside from the main leads, other notable performers in the story such as Angela, Crystal, and Cybelle utilize the voices of real singers. Their characters are very spectacular like real iconic idols. They offer incredible songs that are equally praiseworthy.

It has a unique setting.

While it has a fictional world, the overall feel of the anime isn’t actually futuristic. It’s rather on the present angle where everything feels like I’m a part of their world. With all the social media references, the advancement of technology, and the way how people communicate with one another, everything is casually presented without having some fictitious ambiance. The environment seems plain, but it doesn’t need to be overly done to make it compelling. Its uniqueness is enough to feel the world of Carole and Tuesday.

Carole and Tuesday are genuine characters.

What stands out the most in the anime is the titular characters themselves. I’d say they are the most genuine characters of the Spring 2019. From the time I set my eyes on them, I could easily tell that their characters are very pure that deeply resonate with the heart of the audience. Their friendship is wholesome and very inspiring. Everything about them is such a delight.
