When an ordinary girl turns into a goddess.

Meet Nanami Momozono, a homeless girl who, one day, encounters a strange man named Mikage. As a gratitude for saving him from a dog, he entrusts something to Nanami, which is, a new life as a deity. She ends up entering a shrine, and meets Tomoe, a handsome human fox and is tasked to serve the earth deity. Nanami soon realizes that Mikage is the former earth deity that Tomoe has been serving as his familiar. At first, Tomoe can’t accept Nanami as the new deity in the shrine, but as the days go on, they become closer and start to have intimate feelings to one another.

Based on the popular manga by Julietta Suzuki, Kamisama Hajimemashita is a 13-episode anime series which centers on the daily relationship of a young girl and a human fox. Aside from its lighthearted romance, this anime brings you into an adventurous world of fantasy due to the involvement of supernatural characters and some times, a far-from-reality setting. The progress of the story might be slow for some viewers because same event follows in every episode, like, scenarios where Tomoe would always look after Nanami in school and out, but at least, you’ll get to meet special characters which mainly include Kurama and Mizuki who also spend most of the time on screen.

A relationship with a human fox or a mystical creature isn’t something new anymore, and perhaps, you’ve already encountered similar concept as to this anime, like the popular series Inuyasha. But what makes the series more special is that, Kamisama Hajimemashita highlights a good development of a relationship, from a denial stage to a point where the couple begins to accept the feelings of one another in spite of the barrier as a relationship with a human fox is beyond reality.

Tomoe is a good-looking character and definitely has the anatomy of a bishounen. Fangirls would always love to see his fascinating gestures, his heavenly words that will totally grab their heart. His existence in the series is one of the notable factors, and yes, fangirls can’t deny it, including myself. On the other hand, Nanami is a good female character as well. She has a strong personality, and takes every challenge with perseverance. What I really like about her is that, she is true to herself especially when it comes to her feelings with Tomoe, and I’ve never seen her afraid to express it.

Generally, Kamisama Hajimemashita is your average anime series yet introduces a fantastic world of romance which interests the eyes of the viewers. It’s good and you’ll easily fall in love with it.

  1. This is one of my favourites! If you like this and haven’t read the manga, you should read it! It’s so amazing too! and you get the continuation of the story. I think the anime goes to book 7 or 8 and I have currently up to 15 I think, and I am not up to date either. The story just keeps on getting better and better as it goes!
